Fun Fact

Tribulus Terrestris has earned the nickname ‘puncture vine’ due to its small, sharp spines that cover its fruit which are so robust they puncture bicycle tires.

Hopefully though, after reading this article, you’ll be using Tribulus Terrestris to puncture new holes in your sex life.

I certainly have.

What is Tribulus Terrestris

Another supplement within the sexual energy space, Tribulus Terrestris is known for its ability to naturally boost testosterone levels in men and women, increasing sexual energy, and improving the libido.

Not as widely taken as Tongkat Ali, yet quite the powerhouse, Tribulus Terrestris also has significant benefits for cardiovascular health and athletic performance.

The plant has vasodilating effects, which means it widens the blood vessels, increasing blood flow throughout the cardiovascular system, and also improving endothelial function, the cells that line the interior of blood vessels and play a key role in regulating blood flow.

Dilated blood vessels and increased blood flow is a key factor in increasing the strength and size of an erection, and maintaining the strength of an erection for longer.

Maintaining sexual energy is a component of the pillars of peak performance. When we operate from a space of optimal sexual energy we experience fresh energy, virility, and strengthened fortitude.

Sexual energy is also a source of creative energy, which is important in business and pleasure.

Tribulus Terrestris has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, the traditional medicine system of India, where it is classified as a ‘rasayana herband used as an aphrodisiac. Rasayana herbs are said to promote longevity, enhance vitality, and improve overall health.

It has also been used in traditional Chinese medicine for its warming and energising properties, often recommended to people experiencing fatigue, weakness, or general debility.

Benefits of Tribulus Terrestris

  1. Increases Testosterone Boost – known for its testosterone boosting effects in men and women, increased levels of testosterone increase sexual energy, improve the libido, and increase natural energy levels, muscle growth, and strength. More below on Tribulus and testosterone increase
  2. Improves Cardiovascular Health – It also improves cardiovascular health in several ways, including regulating blood pressure, improving endothelial function which is key to regulating blood flow, and lowering cholesterol levels. More below on Tribulus and cardiovascular improvements
  3. Enhances Athletic Performance – With the combined effect of increased testosterone and an improved cardiovascular system, including an increase in nitric oxide and the resulting benefits of improved blood flow, Tribulus Terrestris is being taken for its ability to significantly enhance athletic performance, endurance, and stamina. Tribulus Terrestris Increases Testosterone

Maintaining healthy testosterone levels is an important factor contributing to the desired state of peak performance.

Testosterone helps maintain natural energy levels, physical strength, and sexual energy. People who experience deficient levels of testosterone are more prone to fatigue and low mood, factors which impede achieving peak performance.

It is considered that Tribulus Terrestris increases testosterone in several ways:

  1. Stimulation of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Release – It is considered that Tribulus Terrestris stimulates the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. LH plays a crucial role in signalling the testes to produce more testosterone. By increasing LH levels, Tribulus Terrestris supports higher testosterone production in the body.
  2. Enhancement of Testicular Steroidogenesis – Some studies have indicated that Tribulus Terrestris influences enzymes involved in the conversion of cholesterol to testosterone in the testes. By modulating these enzymes, the herb supports an optimal environment for increasing production of testosterone.
  3. Adaptogenic Properties – Adaptogens help the body achieve a state of hormonal balance, or homeostasis. Homeostasis reduces the stress hormone cortisol within the body, and at the same time rebalances testosterone to normal levels. Chronic stress is a major cause of testosterone deficiency and impaired libido, adaptogens help mitigate the damaging effects stress has on the sexual organs.
  4. Antioxidant Effects – Oxidative stress is also a cause of reduced testosterone levels. By exerting antioxidant effects, Tribulus Terrestris helps protect the Leydig cells in the testes which are responsible for producing testosterone, maintaining optimal testosterone production.

It’s important to know that any supplements which support an increase in testosterone levels should be taken cyclically to avoid dependency. When taken continuously, the body can become reliant on supplements as a source of testosterone production, resulting in lower testosterone being produced naturally.

We usually take them in periods of 4 – 6 weeks for a boost of testosterone, before coming off them for a period of 2 – 3 months.

Tribulus Terrestris Improves Cardiovascular Health

Although widely taken for its benefits to testosterone and sexual energy, Tribulus Terrestris also offers significant benefits for the cardiovascular system.

If you want to achieve peak performance, maintaining a health cardiovascular system is critical for strong heart health, blood pressure, physical stamina, and endurance.

All too often high performers like business people, corporate leaders, and entrepreneurs forego their health to achieve their objectives, often failing to care for their heart and cardiovascular system. The long-term stress from being in successful positions has severe and damaging effects on heart health, resulting in heart attacks being a common cause of death for highly successful people.

Peak performance isn’t about achieving objectives at the expense of your health, but instead achieving your objectives alongside optimum health. Peak performance includes peak health.

Tribulus Terrestris improves the health of the cardiovascular system in several ways:

  1. Blood Pressure Regulation – Tribulus Terrestris has vasodilating effects, meaning it widens blood vessels, reducing resistance of blood flow. Improved blood flow directly lowers blood pressure.
  2. Cholesterol Modulation – Research has explored the potential of Tribulus Terrestris to impact lipid profiles, including cholesterol levels. It has been suggested that the herb may have a positive influence on reducing levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly referred to as “bad” cholesterol.
  3. Antioxidant Properties – Tribulus Terrestris contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties, such as flavonoids and saponins. Antioxidants help neutralise free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the cardiovascular system.
  4. Improvement in Endothelial Function – Some studies propose that Tribulus Terrestris may enhance endothelial function. Endothelial cells line the interior of blood vessels and play a crucial role in regulating blood flow. Improved endothelial function is associated with better cardiovascular health.
  5. Anti-Inflammatory Effects – Chronic inflammation is a known contributor to cardiovascular diseases. Tribulus Terrestris, with its anti-inflammatory properties, may help reduce inflammation, thereby potentially benefiting overall heart health.

Tribulus Terrestris Enhances Athletic Performance

Although evidence is not conclusive due to insufficient study volumes, it is considered that the combined benefits that Tribulus Terrestris has on the cardiovascular system and increased testosterone has a direct effect on athletic performance.

An improved cardiovascular system, including improved blood flow and increase in nitric oxide, create the optimal environment for stamina and endurance training. If working out, taking Tribulus Terrestris should significantly benefit for your training and recovery.

The increase testosterone also supports muscle growth and maintenance and increases natural energy levels to support workouts.

Tribulus Terrestris enhances athletic performance in several ways:

  1. Testosterone Modulation – Tribulus Terrestris stimulates the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland, which, in turn, signals the testes to produce more testosterone. Increased testosterone levels support improvements in muscle mass, strength, and endurance, which are key factors in athletic performance.
  2. Nitric Oxide Production – Some studies have identified that Tribulus Terrestris increases the production of nitric oxide (NO) in the body. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, meaning it widens blood vessels, which leads to improved blood circulation. Enhanced blood flow is beneficial during exercise as it increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to muscles, reducing fatigue and improving performance.
  3. Energy Metabolism – Some studies have indicated that Tribulus Terrestris promoted energy metabolism, increasing the efficiency of energy production within the body. Improved energy metabolism can be beneficial for endurance athletes, allowing for sustained performance during prolonged exercise. Further research is needed on Tribulus Terrestris’ role in energy metabolism.
  4. Anti-Fatigue Effects – Additionally, it is considered to have anti-fatigue effects, which helps athletes train for more effectively, and for longer periods. Again, further research is needed to understand how Tribulus Terrestris combats fatigue.
  5. Adaptogenic Properties – Tribulus Terrestris is classified as an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body adapt to stressors and restores it to a state of balance, or homeostasis. Chronic stress and inflammation can notably hinder athletic performance, therefore, the adaptogenic properties of Tribulus Terrestris work to mitigate stress during training and enhance overall athletic performance.

Tribulus Terrestris Supplement Types

Tribulus Terrestris is available in various forms, including:

  1. Capsules – Capsules are a popular and convenient way to consume Tribulus Terrestris. They offer precise dosages and are easy to incorporate into daily routines.
  2. Tinctures – Tinctures are liquid extracts, often taken by placing drops under the tongue. They may offer faster absorption compared to capsules.
  3. Tablets – Tablets provide another option for those who prefer a solid form. They are convenient and can be easily taken with water.
  4. Powders – Some people choose to consume Tribulus Terrestris in powdered form, usually mixing it with protein shakes or smoothies.

Natural Alternatives to Tribulus Terrestris:

Due to the lesser volume of research conducted on Tribulus Terrestris than other biohacking supplements, those more cautious purchases may want to consider other natural alternatives to Tribulus Terrestris.

Personally, I am one for always trying new products as I consider it necessary for keeping myself abreast of product updates.

Natural alternatives to Tribulus Terrestris you will want to explore are:

  1. Maca Root – Maca is by far one of my favourites. This natural root comes in various forms, but I always recommend the powder and mixing it into your smoothies. I guarantee you, by lunchtime you will be wearing the biggest hardon in your pants and will be feeling like a wild animal locked in a confined cage. It is great for increasing the strength and size of your erection, even if you don’t have issues maintaining a solid erection. You will just realise there was always more room to grow.
  2. Ashwagandha – Ashwagandha is also an adaptogenic. Available in powder and capsules, it is taken widely for its stress-relieving properties and promotes a sense of calm and wellbeing. However, like maca, it will also increase your libido, and support a greater strength in your pants throughout the day.
  3. Cordyceps Mushrooms – Cordyceps is a fungi, and also an adaptogen. It is taken for its ability to improve stamina and endurance. I have been taking cordyceps daily for a number of months and have seen remarkable improvements in my running, swimming, and functional training. And, just like Maca, it will also send your sex drive into overdrive. The first few weeks taking cordyceps were immense – your sexual energy becomes insatiable. I felt 18 again.
  4. Shilijit Liquid – A tar-like substances oozing from rocks in the mountains and formed over centuries by the decomposition of plant and microbial matter, it is rich in minerals, fulvic acid, and other bioactive compounds that improve sexual energy, stamina, and cognitive functioning. Taking social media by storm, it is being widely consumed for its ability to increase testosterone levels in men and women, increasing sexual desire, stamina, and all round bedroom performance.
  5. Tongkat Ali – Similar to Tribulus Terrestris but packing more punch, men across Tik Tok are sharing their stories of increased strength and size packing down below. Men are reporting an increased sex drive, sperm volume, and penis solidity that supports sexual performance for the benefit of them and their partner(s).
  6. Fadogia Agrestis – If you’re looking for something even harder than Tongkat Ali, then Fadogia Agrestis is your choice. Also known as ‘Black Aphrodisiac’, a quick scan of Tik Tok will show you the countless men reporting improved everything in the bedroom department. Men and women who take Fadogia Agrestis experience heightened levels of sensitivity and pleasure during sexual activity, increased sexual energy, improved performance, and a heightened sense of sexual confidence. Who doesn’t want that in their lives!
  7. Fenugreek – Finally, for those who want something a little more light on the uptake, fenugreek is a herb that naturally promotes testosterone production and may enhance physical performance (although it isn’t something we have tried and tested).

Potential Risks of Taking Tribulus Terrestris

While generally considered safe when used as directed, it’s crucial to be aware of potential risks:

  1. Hormonal Imbalance – Excessive use of Tribulus Terrestris may lead to hormonal imbalances, affecting the endocrine system.
  2. Gastrointestinal Issues – Some individuals may experience gastrointestinal discomfort, such as nausea or stomach cramps.
  3. Allergic Reactions – Rare cases of allergic reactions to Tribulus Terrestris have been reported. It’s advisable to start with a small dose to monitor for any adverse effects.
  4. Prostate Health – Some concerns have been raised about the potential impact of Tribulus Terrestris on the prostate. While some studies suggest that it may have a positive effect, individuals with prostate issues or those at risk for prostate-related conditions should consult with a healthcare professional before using Tribulus Terrestris.
  5. Liver Health – There have been rare reports of liver-related side effects associated with Tribulus Terrestris supplementation. However, more research is needed to establish a clear link. Individuals with pre-existing liver conditions should exercise caution and consult with a healthcare provider.
